The Higher Education Careers Services Unit (HECSU) has commissioned a new four-year study on the career decision-making and career development of part-time HE students, as part of their longitudinal programme Career Making. The study, which will run from 2007 to 2011, will also include research with employers. The employer strand of the research is to be funded by the Department for Education and Skills (now the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills).
The complexity of the part-time student population is of interest to both HE/FE providers and researchers, especially in the context of widening participation and increased fee levels. This proposed research will thus contribute to a better understanding of the implications for the support of part-time students’ career decision-making and will make a major contribution to informing institutional strategies and broader HE policy making.
The study will be undertaken by a team of researchers from London South Bank University (LSBU) and the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, led by Prof Claire Callender from LSBU. Prof Claire Callender has conducted several studies on part-time students, and in March this year, was invited to give oral evidence to the House of Commons Education and Skills Select Committee on this subject. She is also an international and national expert on full- and part-time student finances and has contributed to all the major UK inquiries into student funding. In addition, she has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for 2007-08 to develop cross-national research in this area
