The latest edition of What Do Graduates Do? presents the destinations of those who graduated in 2008, six months after graduation. Using data from the 07/08 Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey, the study reveals that:

  • Graduates from 2008 were less likely than those who graduated a year earlier to be in employment and more likely to be unemployed. They are also more likely to have gone on to further study/training as a sole activity.
  • Architecture and building graduates were particularly hard hit, with the unemployment rate more than doubling from 2.9% for those who graduated in 2007 to 8.5% for the 2008 leavers. Similarly, the unemployment rate for civil engineering graduates went up from 2.4% to 7%.
  • The percentage of 2008 graduates going into business or financial types of occupations was down from a year ago. Fewer graduates were also employed as sales/marketing executives, or entering IT, and legal types of roles compared to a year ago.
  • There has, however, been a year-on-year increase in the percentages of graduates going into health, social and welfare, and education-related occupations.
